Background
If this device looks familiar, that’s because the Healthy Rips ROGUE (buy) is a portable dry herb vaporizer that’s an improvement based on a well-known design. Delaware-based brand Healthy Rips has been known to construct their (as they call it) dry herb extraction devices, all in the same box-shaped design – but in varying sizes and with internal tweaks. Judging from all their prior releases, Healthy Rips is a brand that maintains a dedication to constant improvement- all while keeping to the mid-tier price range.
The Rogue is an improvement on the well-acclaimed Fury Edge (review), at only $10 more than its predecessor, it sports a larger 3000 mAH battery (compared to the Edge’s 2300mAH), a redesigned herb chamber with a larger loading capacity, an adjustable session timer, and an increased temperature range of 280°- 430°F. It also still retains some key features such as convection heating, haptic feedback, and a digital display that shows the battery life and temperature. Just like the Fury Edge, the Rogue also has its own suite of accessories that are geared to elevate every user’s experience.
The Rogue is compatible with dry herb, and I tested this new device with Hawaiian Express CBD flowers from InHemp. Hawaiian Express has a distinct sweet and citrusy taste that’ll remind anyone of tropical fruits like pineapples and mangoes. Kit & Accessories
The Healthy Rips Rogue Kit comes with the usual gear: the device, cleaning tools, extra screens, and o-rings. On top of all that it comes with a few unique inclusions such as a silicone smell cover/protective case to keep it safe from dust and dirt. Take note that it only fits with the plastic mouthpiece. A black glass mouthpiece- which in my opinion, is the better mouthpiece to use with the device. Glass is a neutral material that keeps the vapor pure, and its extended length cools down the vapor even further.
There’s also an accessory attachment so you can attach any of the following additional pieces: a black bent glass mouthpiece and a water pipe adapter. This accessory attachment is the same diameter as the one for the Edge, so you can use any accessories for the Edge with the new Rogue. For every purchase of the Rogue, you may opt to choose a free accessory of your choice – you can get either the bent mouthpiece, water pipe adapter, or a Shred Grinder.
Design & Features
Size & Built: The Rouge’s body (just like Healthy Rips’ entire suite of devices) is made of Kirksite alloy – a known strong and durable material. It measures in at 93mm x 58mm x 30mm, compared to the Edge which is 89mm x 51mm x 25mm – so it’s not exactly a noticeable size change unless you place them side by side. It’s very portable, pocketable and at only 190g, it’s relatively light. Yet, it feels sturdy and has a great hand feel thanks to the smooth rubber-like coating.
Interface: Situated above the mouthpiece is a bright OLED screen that displays all the relevant information such as the current device temperature and battery level. Having an OLED screen is definitely an advantage on a portable vape since it’s brighter than the standard LED, is viewable regardless of the display angle, and requires less power. The Rouge has a three-button interface; namely the two temperature buttons (-,+) and a firing button. These buttons are located on the side opposite the mouthpiece and are fairly “clicky” and tactile.
Under the hood: the diameter of the chamber has been increased to 13mm, which is 2mm larger than on the Edge. While 2mm doesn’t seem significant on paper, it does mean that you can pack more herbs into this device. The chamber holds roughly 0.225g of herb, meaning you won’t have to reload as often in between sessions. The stainless steel heater has also been upgraded to pair effectively with the larger chamber. The glass airpath remains the same, but obviously- larger device = longer air path = cooler vapor.
Battery Life
The Rogue is powered by a 3000mAH lithium polymer battery that charges via USB-C. This is a pretty stark improvement from the Edge that had a 2300mAH battery. The battery is good for about 85-100 minutes of use (depending on the temperatures you’re using it on) and takes 90 minutes to charge from zero.
How to Use
Using the Rogue is pretty straightforward and somewhat similar to the rest of the devices in its design class. To turn the device on, simply click the power button three times. It should vibrate before the screen lights up and displays the last temperature you used it on and will automatically begin heating to that temperature. Holding the power button for 3 seconds flips the orientation of the screen and holding both the + and – buttons switch the temperature display from Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Auto-shutoff timer: One of the features unique to Rouge is the auto-shutoff timer, which as the name suggests- turns off your device automatically when not in use. The auto shut-off timer may be set anywhere from 3 to 8 minutes and be adjusted in 30-second increments. To access the feature, hold the power button and the + button, once the menu displays on the screen, use the temperature buttons to adjust the time. While it is pretty useful, I’d highly recommend manually turning it off after each session to save on battery.
Tip: As mentioned prior, the Rogue does have a larger herb capacity than the Edge and when you’re loading flower onto it – it’s definitely tempting to fill it to its max capacity. But I’d highly recommend a loose pack with a little bit of a gap from its maximum point. It’s also best to use an herb spoon (buy on amazon) for fuss and mess-free loading Convection devices perform better when there’s some space for the hot air to circulate – allowing all the herb to heat evenly throughout the session.
Performance & Vapor Quality
Heat up time: The Healthy Rips Rogue begins heating up nearly immediately to the last set temperature as soon as you turn it on and takes roughly 20 seconds to hit its mark. Compared to the rest of the devices in its price range, that’s quite quick – making the Rogue an even more convenient device of choice.
Vapor Quality: The resulting vapor from the Rogue is nothing short of excellent. Flavorful, dense, and never warmer than average, especially for the first 1-3 hits. The stainless steel bowl and the glass air path mean that the vapor you get is pure since glass is a neutral material. At lower temperatures, the vapor is smooth, flavorful and a lot more voluminous than you’d expect from a device of its size. At higher temperatures, the vapor density and volume will slightly irritate your lungs (as expected) – so best to stick to somewhere in the low-mid range.
One thing to note is draw resistance – while some devices end up having a sort of thick milkshake-like draw, the Rogue is pretty much smooth and comparable to an effortless sip, especially with the longer glass mouthpiece attached, and even more with the bent glass mouthpiece.
Bottom Line
At $159, the Healthy Rips Rogue falls into the mid-tier range and slightly outperforms other devices in the same price range. Its output volume and flavor quality are pretty notable, as are its improvements over the Edge. However, if you do already own the Edge, I wouldn’t make the switch just for the sake of owning something new. Save for the improved battery life and larger oven capacity – they really are nearly similar.
But if you are looking for a totally new device that’s reliable, with a wide breadth in terms of performance – the Rogue is definitely worth the purchase. It produces great quality vapor that’s flavorful, dense, and pure, comes with a wide range of optional accessories, and is made in a design that’s been tried and tested – proving its overall durability and quality.
