Kind Pen OG Jams Review

New Jersey-based brand Kind Pen (visit homepage) was founded by vaporizer enthusiasts eager to create affordable alternatives to the pipes, bongs, and torches of the past. This year, they’ve outdone themselves with the release of their newest collection of vaporizers – three all-new devices which balance portability, function, and flavor – regardless of your chosen material. They’ve released two concentrate devices, The Don (review | buy) – which is an all-in-one portable dab rig with a self-contained water filtration tube, and the Lobi wax pen (review | buy).

The only dry herb vaporizer in the collection is the OG Jams (buy). The OG Jams features precise temperature control, a ceramic chamber with a 1g capacity, adjustable vortex airflow, an LED display, a glass mouthpiece, and a 2000 mAh battery that charges via USB-C or via the dock that comes included with the kit.

Kit and Accessories

Kind Pen devices usually come with kits that cover all the bases, coming with the necessary extras and cleaning tools you need to use your devices at their best. The OG Jams, however, comes with all that and then some.

Other than the usual inclusions such as the device, spares, and charging cable. The kit also comes with a small glass bubbler, a silicone sleeve for a better grip and heat resistance, and a dock that keeps your device upright while it’s getting charged.

Design and Features

Designing a vaporizer that stands out in an already saturated market is a pretty tough feat. Devices can be something simple like the usual box mod, be a little sleeker like a pen, or be incredibly rugged and utilitarian – as in the case of Storz and Bickel (visit homepage) devices. The OG Jams, however, took an entirely new direction.

Unique Device Body: The OG Jams’ device body can easily be distinguished into two parts. First is the circular top portion where the mouthpiece, the vapor path window, and the airflow valve are located. This entire piece is removable and is securely locked onto the bottom half of the device with strong magnets, so you won't have to worry about anything spilling at any time.

The bottom half of the device is where all of the electronics are. On the front is the OG Jams logo in a cool graffiti print (perfectly complimenting the iridescent colors of the device I have here) and a small LED screen that displays the current device status such as the temperature level and battery level. All the buttons are located on a single side – with the firing button up top, and the temperature control buttons parallel to the LED display.

Mouthpiece

The mouthpiece of the OG Jams is made of glass and spans the entire length of the circular half of the device. Obviously, glass is a fragile material so this somewhat limits the portability of your device, but it seems like a fair trade for what is one of the best features of the OG Jams (or any vaporizer for that matter).

Glass is a neutral material that helps to keep the flavor pure so it’s untainted by any foreign materials, and its length also aids in cooling down the vapor before it reaches your lips. This particular mouthpiece is also compatible with the included water bubbler or may be connected to a 14mm water pipe.

Adjustable Airflow

Under the vapor path window, there’s a small black notch that may be adjusted to control the amount of air that flows into the device / the draw resistance. Kind Pen calls this “the adjustable vortex airflow”.

Increasing the airflow will cause more air to enter and mix with the vapor coming from the ceramic convection chamber – resulting in cooler, lighter vapor. While decreased airflow will produce denser and more flavorful vapor. 

Battery

The OG Jams has a 2000 mAh battery – good for roughly 3-4 hours, depending on your usage. Like most new devices these days, the OG Jams may be charged via USB-C.

You can opt to plug in the cable directly into the port at the bottom of the device or plug the port into the included dock, place the OG Jams on it and keep it upright.

Performance and Vapor Quality

First things first, the OG Jams is definitely not made for micro-dosing. In fact, its large 1g herb capacity actually plays into its name – you can either opt to have a lengthy solo session or enjoy a “jam” session with friends and use the included bubbler for even better results.

The OG Jams features precise temperature control with a range of 302°F—446°F – allowing you to dial in the perfect temperatures for your ground herb, without losing flavor and potency in the process. Also, its 

Vapor Quality: Convection heating vaporizes the herb via the hot air created in the heating element, which is pulled into the chamber as you draw. This fully extracts all the terpenes and of the other potent organic materials. 

The combination of the Ceramic Chamber, convection heating, and the glass mouthpiece result in terpene-rich, well-tasting vapor – which can be as dense or as light as you want – depending on how you fiddle with the airflow control.

Bottom Line

The Kind Pen OG Jams definitely classifies as a well-performing, reliable vaporizer. It’s incredibly easy to use, and it’s pretty apparent that Kind Pen has geared all its features towards making sure that the vapor quality is as top-notch and as flavorful as it can be.

Other than the unique design of the device itself, there aren’t too many bells and whistles here, just a simple straightforward device that you can take with you every day.
