Video Review
Overview
Today, we have a review of the Bomb eRig. This $180 concentrate vaporizer (visit store and use coupon code TVG10 for 10% off) has features that you don't usually see in this price range, like real-time temperature control and precise temperature adjustments. I'll explain both of these features shortly.
Until very recently, you had to spend $420 on a Peak Pro (visit store, coupon TVG10) if you wanted to have these two features, but that changed recently with the release of the $220 new Peak (visit store, coupon TVG10)—at least partly—as the new Peak only has one of these features.
In this review, I'll look at the features of the Bomb and compare it to its closest competitor, the new Peak.
The kit
We have the device itself, with the glass bubbler, heating chamber, and carb cap already installed.
Then, there's also a dab tool, USB-C cable, a small funnel for the bubbler, and a few cotton swabs.
Design
The rig itself is heavier than it looks. It has more or less the same footprint as the Puffcos but is a lot shorter.
It has one activation button in the front with a small screen and a charging port.
3D Chamber
The heating chamber of the Bomb is a ceramic 3D chamber, which means that the heating coil is embedded into the walls of the chamber.
It has a huge chamber, considering its size. For comparison, here is the Peak's heating chamber, and the Peak Pro XL heating chamber.
Carb cap
Then there is the carb cap, which, again, is very similar to the Puffco's joystick carb cap. The new Peak has a smaller joystick, but the Bomb's is practically identical to the Peak Pro's joystick.
How to use
Alright, to use the Bomb, you can fill the bubbler with a little water using the included funnel, or use it dry, as I usually do.
Then, five clicks to unlock and start the pre-heat process.
Three clicks will enter temp selection mode.
Unlike the new Peak, which only has four preset temperature levels that range between 490-590℉, the Bomb has precise temp control anywhere between 200–700℉.
Clicking the button will raise the temperature, and it will blink three times to indicate the temp has been set.
Then, I can either click and hold the button to activate manual heat, or I can double-click for auto heat, so there's no need to hold the button.
The screen shows the session duration and temperature in real-time, and another tap at any time will stop the session and return to standby mode.
Real-time temp control
Now, the most important feature that the Bomb has compared to cheaper rigs like the Core 2.1, for example, is real-time temperature control.
You see, most concentrate vaporizers work on voltage, not temperature. They just supply a constant preset voltage to the coil, no matter what the conditions are, or what its current temp is. This can obviously overheat the concentrates and ruin a session.
For real-time temp control, you need a sensor in the chamber that gives feedback to a microprocessor, which makes adjustments to the power sent to the coil in real time. This ensures that the concentrates never overheat and the flavor stays ideal even at the end of the session.
Both Puffco Peak and Peak Pro feature real-time control, along with a very few other rigs. The vast majority work with voltage levels.
Bubbler
Another difference between Bomb and the Puffco is in the mouthpiece of the bubbler. The Puffco's goes straight up, so to inhale, you either need to tilt your head down or tilt the rig so the glass lines up with your lips. But that's not efficient as the concentrate is not at the bottom of the coil when the device is tilted, plus it can spill if you tilt it too much.
The Bomb has a mouthpiece that's pointed towards me, so it's easier to use while upright.
Bomb vs Puffco Peak
If you're looking to max out the features you can get in your rig, then yes, the Bomb has more features that make for a better experience. You get a larger chamber than the Peak, a larger temp range, with precise control of +/- 1°F vs. the Peak's four presets. Plus, an onboard display, and a larger joystick. Some of these features are only available with the Peak Pro.
But more than anything, in my opinion, the larger chamber of the Bomb is what gives it an edge over the Peak. It's wider and a lot deeper. Large chambers retain heat better and are more efficient.
That said, I totally get why someone will go for Puffcos proven track record, ecosystem, or just brand recognition in general.
Both options represent the top tier of eRigs and are good options.
