Design & Features
Portability
510 vape batteries are traditionally shaped as long narrow pens that can accidentally break or turn. Worse, you could end up sitting on them (yup, been there). This portability issue won’t be a problem with the rectangular Flip Ultra. The Flip is bigger than a typical car key remote. It stands about 3inches tall and 1.5inches wide and weighs 75 grams, making it very compact, easy to carry and discreet.
Flip-Lock Mechanism
As the name suggests, the cartridge is folded into the device and flips out when you push the button, just like a car key. The flip-lock mechanism allows you to secure the cartridge while in your pocket so it wouldn’t accidentally open. I love this feature since it once again reinforces how more portable and less fragile the Flip is compared to other vape pens out there.
Auto On-Off
The flip-lock mechanism also triggers the Flip to power on and off automatically. It turns on when flipping out the cart and turns off when the cart is secured back into place. In my opinion, this feature makes the Flip easier to use compared to traditional setups where you need to press a button a few times. This also makes it perfect for users who like taking quick random hits while on the move, especially as the Flip generally doesn’t require preheating time.
Voltage Setting
The Flip features a precise temp control and a wide voltage range of 2.7V to 4.8V. The lower levels are usually aimed for users who are looking for a soft, mild vapor. This can be easily adjusted for those who are looking for a stronger experience. The desired voltage is set via the smaller button on the right side of the screen in 0.1V increments.
Digital Display
The digital screen automatically comes to life the moment you flip the cart, displaying the voltage level, battery life, and a puff counter. The puff counter is useful for those who want to follow their THC/CBD consumption throughout the day or track how long each cartridge lasts. You can easily reset the puff counter by clicking both the big and small buttons twice simultaneously.
Battery
The Flip Ultra is powered by a 650mAh battery. Since oil pens typically don’t consume energy as much as dry herb vapes or wax pens, the battery here will easily last a couple of days of use for most people.
510 threads usually need to be screwed to the charger, but not the Flip. It has both a standard micro-USB port and a lightning port that allows you to use your phone charger.
Matte Finish
The Flip’s matte rubber finish gives it a sleek look and a silky feel and gives users a firmer grip. Although there are a few claims that the edges peel off after a few weeks of use, so far, the finish on my Flip Ultra remains smooth and intact after a month’s use. I will update this review if anything changes.
Cartridges
The Flip Ultra comes with the brand’s 510 Cart in Gunmetal that you can easily fill with your own oil. But it is still compatible with most 510 thread oil cartridges, which is the industry standard.
Performance & Vapor Quality
Performance
As an on-demand device, the Flip Ultra cart will fly out ready for immediate vaping the moment you hit the cart-release button. Personally, I prefer pre-heating the oil first to make the most out of my CBD cart. Although O2vape claims that preheating is available by clicking the button for a few seconds, I didn’t feel anything different when hitting it.
Vapor Quality
Vapor quality is largely affected by the cart oil you’re using, but the voltage setting plays a big role here too. Each cartridge will probably perform best at a different voltage level, but I found the sweet spot for most of them somewhere between 3.7V and 3.9V.
As mentioned earlier, the lower settings produce milder vapor and more robust terps flavor and can be used for discreet sessions. For a firmer and more intense session, use the higher settings; the 650mAh battery can deliver an impressively powerful experience.
Bottom line
The list of cool features for the Flip Ultra just goes on and on, like dual-charging options, long battery life, and precise temperature. Its price and lifetime warranty makes it a safe choice for users looking for a 510 thread battery for traveling and outdoor vaping.
One potential issue is the cartridge size, as wider carts may not fit in the small cart niche. It does fit standard carts that most people would use, so this won’t be a problem if you stick to the standard sizing.
The built quality and the material’s life span are also worth exploring. The strong build does make the Flip heavier than expected, but the weight increase isn’t really that significant. I also think the quality is more important than the weight, knowing that even if you have a lifetime warranty, you wouldn’t want to deal with warranty activation and wait for a new one.
With that being said, the Flip Ulta still has more highlights than drawbacks. For that reason, I give it my seal of approval.
