Background
KandyPens (visit homepage) has a huge catalog of vaporizers. In fact, I've tried some of them- the K-Vape Pro (Review), for example, is an entry-level dry herb vape that produces good vapor for its price. Another one is the Crystal (Review) which is currently one of the best dab pens in 2024. If you're looking for a portable dab rig that's durable and effective, Oura is one of my recommendations.
Now, Special K is geared towards newcomers and experienced oil vapers. It has a pen-like design that comes with black/white coating. It's compatible with any 510-threaded THC/CBD cartridges, and it also has refillable cartridges that can hold 1ml of liquid concentrat
es. It features three voltage settings that you can use to set your vaping profile whether you want to have a chill or quick session.
Design & Features
The Special K looks like an expensive fountain pen that I often see on contract or deed signing. It has a glossy finish with gold accents that's aesthetically pleasing. It weighs heavier than a usual pen but approximately has the same length. In short, this is the vape that you can stick in your front pocket and look all dapper, and no one will be the wiser.
It has a ‘K' button in the middle that lights up whenever I turn it on/off or cycle through voltage settings. The casing that encloses the oil tank has a peep thru window that allows me to monitor the level of oil in the tank. So, you don’t need to remove the whole thing if you need to know how much oil you have left.
The Special K lets you enjoy most of the THC/CBD cartridges since it has a 510 connection which is the universal standard for carts and batteries. My only issue with this vape pen’s use of 510 connection for everything is that the USB charger uses it too. This means that pass-through charging is impossible, plus having to screw the Special K into a charger takes longer than attaching a regular USB cable would.
Cartridges
There are two included refillable carts that can hold 1ml of cannabis oil. It has a gold coating that looks nice and adds to the overall aesthetic. If you're not planning to use it, you can unscrew the exterior shell and put any 510 pre-filled carts that you like. Yes, you can vape without the exterior shell but be cautious since there's nothing to protect it from breaking if you accidentally drop your vape.
How to Use
Special K is pretty simple to use as most oil vapes do. To use it you need to:
- Unscrew the pen cap from the casing and then unscrew the casing from the battery.
- Attach a refillable or pre-filled tank to the 510 threads.
- (Optional) Replace the casing so that it conceals the tank.
- Press the power button five times to turn on the vaporizer.
- Press the power button three times to toggle the voltage settings.
- Once heating is complete, inhale from the mouthpiece.
Voltage Settings: You can cycle through different settings by pressing the power button three times. It has the following voltages: 3.2V | 3.7V | 4.2V
Performance & Vapor Quality
The Special K heats up at about three seconds to reach the selected temperature which allowed me to take a quick hit whenever I want. The vapor quality mainly depends on the kind of oil you're using especially in pre-filled cartridges. However, there's one factor that affects my experience—the right voltage setting.
The voltage settings helped me pick the right temperature for my session. The lowest setting produces a mild and flavorful vapor which works great for discreet sessions. While the highest setting produces harsh and denser vapor that helped me fall asleep. I like the middle setting since I prefer the balance of flavor and vapor production.
Battery Performance: The Special K has a 650 mAh battery which is decent for oil vapes since it doesn't consume energy as much as dry herb vapes or wax pens do. On a full charge, it can last for days of casual vaping. However, as I've mentioned before, charging the battery can be an inconvenience. Aside from needing to screw it on the battery, the charger is small and there's a chance you might lose it (especially if you're ‘baked’ at the end of a session).
Bottom Line
Special K highlights what matters most in a vaporizer: Functionality. It has a fast heat-up time, three voltage settings (rather than a fixed one), and a long battery life which could probably empty your pre-filled carts. The refillable cartridges that are included in the kit come handy when you want to vape liquid extracts.
Overall, this is the finest 510 battery you can buy that's under $100. If you're a beginner with a tight budget, KandyPens 510 Battery (Review) or KandyPens C-Box (Review) seems to be a great option. You can also try the included battery on Dr Dabber CBD, which you can buy as a combo pack for $50.
