Overview
The Dr Dabber Switch 2 is probably the biggest thing to happen in the concentrate vaporizer world in the last five years. In this review, I'll explore the design, features, and what makes this vape unique, like its induction heating and infrared temperature sensor. I'll also explain how to use it, talk about performance, and compare it to the gold standard of eRigs- the Puffco Peak Pro.
The Switch retails for $420, and coupon code VG10 will save you 10% directly from Dr. Dabber. That's $42 off, for a final price of $378. Pretty sweet. I also have coupon codes for many other vapes, check them out here.
Kit & accessories
The kit includes the vaporizer unit, with the glass bubbler and carb cap already installed.
Plus, small tweezers, the USB-C charger, and a heated loading tool, aka “hot knife,” which Dr Dabber calls the “Drop.” It's cool that they include this in the kit; a hot knife is an essential tool that's usually a $40-$50 upsell. The little ceramic tip heats up and melts the concentrate on demand exactly to the center of the bowl.
Titanium chamber
The chamber is made from Grade 2 Titanium, and around it, there is an induction coil that creates a high-frequency alternating magnetic field. This field induces tiny electric currents, called “eddy currents,” which flow in loops inside the titanium chamber. The resistance these currents create as they move through the metal heats the chamber quickly and evenly.
The rainbow-like finish is the result of heat oxidation. When titanium is heated—especially through induction heating—it reacts with oxygen, forming an oxide layer. As this layer thickens with exposure to heat, it creates this rainbow effect. This oxidation process has several benefits; it strengthens the titanium and enhances its corrosion resistance. Plus, it looks super cool.
Assembly & Vapor Path
The Quartz bowl fits perfectly into the titanium chamber. It slowly slides down and makes full contact with the titanium cup from the bottom and all sides.
Quartz has a few advantages over Ceramic, but most notable is its ability to heat up more quickly and retain less residual heat. This makes temperature control more responsive and precise. Plus, quartz provides a cleaner, more flavorful experience since it is non-porous and won't absorb residues over time, unlike Ceramic.
The Quartz cup has two holes on opposite sides, and when the carb cap is positioned as during normal use- air is injected into the bottom of the bowl, picks up vapor, and is then sucked through these two holes. Then, it passes through into the glass bubbler, which has a little marker to help ensure the holes line up perfectly.
All this shiny black material is glazed alumina ceramic, so again, it keeps a clean and pure vapor path with neutral materials and zero contamination.
The carb cap is magnetic, so I can just drop it, and it snaps right into place. It also has a ball joint, so you can move it to direct the air into the corners of the bowl to maximize airflow.
Interface & App
The Switch has an on/off switch in the back and once turned on, it vibrates and shows the battery level with three LEDs right above it. The front has the interface buttons, and the body has an RGB light strip that communicates settings and temperature levels.
To start heating up, you click the power button once. The Switch vibrates and shows a red color while heating up and a green color once it's ready to go.
The Switch comes with five preset temp levels, from Purple at 400°F up to White at 540°F. These presets can be adjusted using the app, which unlocks advanced features and new functionality.
Deep customizations using the App
The home screen shows the battery level, current temp in the chamber, and a “dabomater.”
I can manually enter a precise temp or select one of the five presets. I can also edit each preset and set it anywhere between 250-650°F, and if I save it, It'll be available from the device as one of the five presets without opening the app.
Plus, I can change the heating profile. This is really super cool. I can select:
- Descent– which stimulates the thermal decay of a traditional nail, naturally cooling as time passes.
- Ascent– which stimulates torching the nail as you inhale, increasing temperature over time.
- Or, Steady– which “holds” the precise temp for the entire session duration.
The ability to change the heating profile and stimulate “real world” scenarios is a brand-new concept that no other rig offers, and it makes perfect sense.
The app also allows you to adjust the “hold” or session duration anywhere between 10-90 seconds, or customize the LED lights, and adjust the device settings, such as auto-shutoff.
Once heat-up is activated, you can view the current temp in the bowl, a session timer, adjust the temp, or extend the session by ten seconds.
Real-time Temp control
Let's take a second and talk about the most important feature of any eRig- real-time temperature control. The vapor quality is directly affected by any rig's ability to keep a controlled and regulated temperature in the bowl.
For real-time temperature control, you need an instrument that measures the temp and sends data to a microprocessor, which makes real-time adjustments in the power sent to the heating element to maintain precisely the desired temperature. And all this needs to happen many times per second.
For example, if you're inhaling, you're effectively removing heat from the bowl, so the sensor will recognize the drop in temperature and immediately signal to the heating element to get hotter.
In a perfect world, the temperature of the bowl will always be controlled. That will ensure optimal flavor and produce predictable, consistent results. Plus, it will preserve the concentrates, which can get pretty expensive if you're using the good stuff.
And the Switch has a few things going for it when it comes to real-time control-
- It uses an infrared temperature sensor vs the traditional contact-based sensors, such as thermocouples. Infrared sensors have a faster response time, higher temperature sensitivity, are more accurate, and read the temperature without any physical contact; therefore, they don't interfere with the heating process.
- The induction heating method used by the Switch heats up the entire Titanium chamber as one unit, unlike 3D or 360 chambers, which rely on resistive wires embedded in the ceramic material, leading to uneven heat distribution in some areas.
- The quartz bowl retains less heat than the ceramic bowl, making it more responsive to temperature adjustments and, by that, easier to control in real time.
So yes, the Switch absolutely excels when it comes to temperature control and does a better job than any rig I've ever tested in maintaining a precise temperature in the chamber.
The app actually shows you the current temp in the bowl, and it doesn't fluctuate at all during the session, when it's on “Steady,” of course. It doesn't matter how hard I inhale; I can't move it from its target temp.
And I'm not relying only on the internal temperature sensor here. I'm using an external infrared monitor that shows me the precise temperature, how steady it holds, and also the temperature variation between different parts of the bowl.
And that's not to trash the Peak Pro! I love this device! It's been my go-to for the past couple of years and has always impressed me with zero letdowns.
Switch 2 VS. Peak Pro 3DXL
I have a detailed comparison between the Switch 2 and the Peak Pro, but here is a snapshot of the differences:
- Size: the Switch is obviously larger and heavier. You can hold it while using if you want, but it's more of a “tabletop” device and definitely less portable. With that said, I personally love the way it looks. It can easily be placed on a shelf or displayed without being so obviously a rig.
- Heating method: as I mentioned, the Switch works with induction, which is superior to the 3D chamber of the Peak Pro.
- There's also the infrared temp sensor and better temperature control of the Switch, again, as I mentioned earlier.
- Chamber material: The Switch uses a Quartz cup as the liner for the bowl, which is considered superior to the Puffcos Ceramic. Also, when it's time to replace the “chamber,” this quartz cup is all you need to replace. With the Peak Pro, you must replace the entire $100 chamber if it gets “Chazzed”. So, cheaper maintenance with the Switch.
- The Switch also comes with a hot knife, which Puffco sells for an additional $50.
- And the temp range is 450-620°F with the Peak and 250-650°F with the Switch.
Here is what's the same, or similar, between the two:
- Both vaporizers retail for $420. How convenient. Check out the description below for the latest pricing and coupon codes; I have a 10% code for the Dr. Dabber and a code for free glob mops with the Peak Pro.
- Both vapes also have an extensive and useful app. The Puffco app is more refined, as it's been around longer, but the Switch app has exclusive functionality like the heating profiles I mentioned. An app also means firmware updates, so that's great for both.
Both vapes are top in class, and while they took different approaches to vaporizing concentrates, the result is similarly exceptional. Watch my in-depth comparison for more info.
With the Switch specifically, the experience is very similar to the real thing; it behaves and performs like a traditional rig with a quartz nail.
Bottom line
Is it worth $420? Well, $378 if you use my coupon.. Budget is personal, but for me, it's an absolute yes.
The Switch is a unique vaporizer that's unlike anything else that's been released before. From the induction heating that's executed perfectly to the infrared sensor or quartz bowl, every single component Dr. Drabber put in this vape uses the best available materials or technology.
And they have succeeded, in my opinion, this is the best concentrate vaporizer in the world right now. If you're serious about your concentrates, can afford the Switch, and don't mind the size, it one-ups the Peak Pro and sets a new benchmark for “pro level” eRigs.
