Background

There might just be no brand with a line-up as extensive as Yocan. With multiple devices in each form of vaporizing, Yocan is quickly becoming the go-brand for anyone looking for their first or supplementary, budget-friendly devices. They’ve made great headway with concentrate vaporizers like Regen (review), and the Armor (review) vape pen, and the Yocan Hit (review) dry herb vaporizer.

The Yocan Lux (visit store) is a budget-friendly 510 threaded, pen-style vape battery. The Lux features a zinc alloy body, an integrated 400mAh battery, variable voltage, and a 15-second pre-heating function. According to Yocan, its an update on the Yocan B-Smart, and similarly, on the outset it looks like a pretty simple battery – in true Yocan fashion, it’s definitely got a few functional surprises.

Compatibility: The Lux is designed to work with 510-threaded THC/CBD cartridges, we used the Delta 8 Cart from Industrial Hemp Farms for this review. Get your CBD cart at 10% off with our code: TVG10

Design and Features

As mentioned earlier, the Lux is a pen-style 510 battery, although it’s more on the chunky side. It’s definitely got some heft to it too, but it’s nowhere near heavy at all. Without a cartridge, the Lux measures 16.5mm in diameter and 76.5mm in height. The Lux also comes in 5 colors and has a pretty shiny, sleek finish.

Much like most 510 batteries, the Yocan Lux has a single button for both turning the device on/off and firing. But while most other devices utilize this same button for adjusting the current-voltage, the Lux has a unique silver dial at the top of the pen. Yocan’s website says that the reason for this placement is that oftentimes, having the dial below the device (as in the case of the B-Smart) led to misoperation especially in pockets or bags.

The voltages seem to be laser printed onto the dial and are pretty easy to read. You can opt to go from 1.8v to 4.2v simply by twisting the dial. There’s also a somewhat tactile click that’s felt while twisting – which is pretty cool since it means you don’t exactly have to look at the numbers to see where you’re at.

Performance and Vapor Quality

While it’s nice in theory to have multiple voltage settings, in practice, it’s a little moot.

That’s because a 400mAh battery capacity isn’t much – in fact, most devices with this battery capacity only have a single setting. Not having a lot of power means more often than not, the battery simply outputs the highest voltage the battery is capable of producing.

So, on the Lux – the best voltage to stick to is the highest one. The only reason to really go lower is to preserve the battery life. Otherwise, any cartridge you plug into is best served by the highest (4.2v) setting.

Pre-heat function: Pressing the button twice pre-heats the Lux at 1.8 for 15 seconds. It’s a pretty useful function, but only with cartridges that have silica or ceramic wicks. I wouldn’t recommend that you use that function with cotton wicks because they could get burnt.

Bottom Line

The Yocan Lux, at only $20, offers great value and isn’t at all complicated to use. It’s portable and discreet. But also, there isn’t a lot that’s special about it. It serves any vaper looking for a basic battery and is a great addition to any vaper’s arsenal especially at its price point- but if you’re looking for more options and larger battery life, take a look at our list of the year’s best 510 vape cart batteries.
