Yocan Pillar Review - Best eRig for under $100?
Background
Some brands release a new vaporizer every couple of years, such as Pax or Puffco, and some brands release new products almost on a daily basis. One of the latter is the Chinese manufacturer Yocan. In this review, we'll look at their latest portable mini-rig, the Yocan Pillar.
The Pillar retails for around $100, which is way below most typical eRigs. I don't even think that it is fair to call it a “Rig.” Maybe more like a “thick dab pen with a water filter on top.” But either way, let's see if it's any good.
It is available from Vape-Smart with coupon code TVG10 for 10% off.
Kit
So the kit is pretty basic. It includes the body, the bubbler, and two coils. Yocan calls these TGT coils, which we'll talk about shortly. There are also a charging cable and dab tool.
Design
So as I mentioned, the vape is shaped like a thick vape pen with two main components- the body and the bubbler. They connect to each other with a solid magnet, which is pretty neat.
The heating coil is under the bubbler, and there are two included in the kit. Yocan calls these TGT coils, but I'm not sure what it stands for.
But here is what I can see- the center of the coil is raised, and it looks like that's where the air is coming through. I can see little coil wires inside that piece in the center, so the whole thing gets hot and heats up the wax.
One of the coils has a flat dish, it looks like it is made from Ceramic, but again, not sure.
The other has four rods with coils. Yocan calls it “Quad Coil.”
Performance & vapor quality
As with any wax vape, the coils with rods will get hotter quicker and provide a more harsh experience. Some users like that, but I personally opt for the softer, more flavorful option, which is usually flat coils with no rods. So I'll attach that, and fill water in the bubbler.
I'll place some extract in the coil, and the bubbler on top, and then click it five times, and select a voltage level from the three presets. I'll start with the lowest, and then click it twice to start heating up.
The vapor quality was pretty good, especially in the beginning of each session, but very quickly degraded as the coil got too hot, even on the lowest setting.
What could have been better
Not surprisingly, vapes in the price range don't have any type of “temperature regulation,” so the coil gets a steady supply of voltage that is consistent and doesn't change. So it starts not so hot, but as the session goes on, the coil gets too hot and burns the wax.
Another issue I have with this vape is- how do I clean this thing?! I usually mop my coil at the end of each session, but with these coils, that was impossible. Because these are not sealed bowls like the Peak Pro or even the Utillian 8 I just reviewed. These have narrow channels that are impossible to get to with a swab. So if you buy this vape, keep in mind that you may have to swap coils frequently. They are around $10 each, so it's not super expensive, but still, it's an extra cost that needs to be considered. And to be fair, all wax vapes need a change of coil at some point. It just seems that sealed bowls last a lot longer.
Bottom line
So yea, should you buy it? Well, let's put it like that- if you are a first-time user, have a super-tight budget, and the price is your biggest priority, then yes. It is decent for $100.
But if you are looking for a long-lasting “daily driver,” I think you should consider investing a little more and get a better rig. For $200, you can get the Utillian 8, which is good value for the price, or if you want to splurge, the Peak Pro is around $400, but it will give you the best dab experience possible and will last years.
