Yocan Torch XL Review

Background

There’s a good number of brands in today’s vaporizer market- but so far, we haven’t come across a brand like Yocan. Yocan is a dynamic manufacturer that seems to have something in almost every space in the spectrum. They’re the makers of the concentrate vaporizers like the Explore.  

The Yocan Torch and the Yocan Torch XL (visit store) are products that function the same way and share an interface, but they’re differentiated by size and power. Yocan Torch was first released in 2019 and was updated in 2020. 

Both Torch devices go beyond this basic function and come with several added features like quartz dual and triple coil atomizers, a glass cap for pure flavor, continuous heating, adjustable airflow, and variable voltage (Torch XL).  For devices that seem quite feature-heavy, the price tag is certainly light. The Torch retails at $60 while the Torch XL is at $75. That’s a pretty big jump from other eNails like the $400 Puffco Peak Pro (review) and half the price of the KandyPens Session (review).

Compatibility: The Yocan Torch and Yocan Torch XL are compatible with wax concentrate and almost any rig available. I used it with CBD dab from Steve’s Goods and from In-Hemp and a rig from Higher Standards.

Kit and Accessories

Since these devices are of the same series, they come with several of the same things right out of the box- the device, glass and metal tubes, a manual, and a dab tool.

What differs is that the Torch 2020 comes with both the quartz dual and triple coils, a micro-USB Charger, and a 1100mAH battery. While the Yocan Torch XL comes with two Evolve Plus XL quad coils, a 2200mAH battery, and a USB-C charging cable. 

Design

Design-wise, both devices look the same and they definitely resemble a tuning fork. But this unique design definitely has a purpose. The taller side is your battery, which produces a certain amount of heat, and the shorter side is the atomizer where your material is vaporized. 

Keeping them separate means the device is cool to the touch. On the base of the device is a tiered connector that is made to fit into any glass water piece. You can also use the bottom connecting piece as either a male or female adapter. 

All the metal parts of the Yocan Torch and Yocan Torch XL are made from medical-grade stainless steel. The entire device is also quite modular- all the pieces can be unscrewed from the base with ease. This makes it fairly easy to customize your experience by either changing the atomizer or the tube above it. The metal or glass tube can be pulled up to expose the atomizer when you need to load the device, and it’s sealed by silicone grommets on the base of the device.

The atomizer of the devices has three parts, the cap (which can be removed with the help of the dab tool), the pre-installed coil, and the base which contains the 510 thread.

Interchangeable Coils

The interchangeable coils are a key feature in the Yocan Torch. You may opt to switch between the quartz dual coil or the quartz tri coil. This coil consists of a metal wire wrapped around small quartz rods. This coil heats up faster than a ceramic coil and produces thick, dense vapor. 

The coil on the Torch XL is technically interchangeable and you get two of the same Evolve Plus XL quad coils right out of the box. However, you can also use the same quartz triple coil that’s found on the Torch 2020. 

Adjustable Airflow

Both devices come with the stainless steel cap pre-installed, and at the top of this cover is the airflow control “button”. Having this feature allows you to control the draw resistance in the device. Simply depress the spring-loaded carb to enjoy a fuller hit. For a device at this price, this is a pretty good feature and I definitely prefer this version of the carb cap over the one on the KandyPens Oura. 

Unlike most vapes, an adjustable airflow is an option with these devices, rather than something that’s built-in. If what you’re after is more flavor, but a lighter vapor- you can use the included glass cap.

Battery

Physically, the Torch and Torch XL have the same size batteries – but they differ in power. The Torch has a 1100mAH battery which can be charged with your standard micro-USB plug. The Torch heats continuously for 15 seconds for each puff. A fully charged battery will last you 45 puffs or roughly 11 minutes of continuous use. Charging time is roughly a couple of hours. 

The Yocan Torch XL definitely lives up to the XL in its name with a battery that is exactly double the capacity of the Torch. At 2200mAH, this battery supplies power to a more demanding quad coil atomizer. This device also heats for 15 seconds, but with the variable voltage and the more powerful atomizer, it’s quite hard to tell how long the battery will last. To keep the power flow stable, the Torch XL can be charged via USB-C.

Performance

With the modular design, the interchangeable coils, and caps- you can pretty much have a different experience each time, all depending on the combination of components you use. This is true for both of the Torch devices, but they do differ in how much control you have over the whole session.

Even when it was updated and re-released in 2020, the Torch still maintained its single temperature setting. It heats your herb at a temperature range of 482F to 536F. This wide gap is due to the fact that quartz tri-coil gets hotter than the pre-installed dual coil. Despite this un-exact temperature range, the baseline vapor quality on the device is excellent. The taste is good, and the draws are smooth- no matter the size or duration of the hit.  

The Yocan Torch XL deviates from having a single setting to having three – low  (3.2v), medium (3.7v), and high (4.2.v). This addition of a variable voltage gives allows every user to be more precise. Each temperature setting is indicated by an LED colored light right on the power button; white (low), blue (medium), and green (high). 

The temperatures on the Torch XL aren’t exactly very hot, it’s definitely less hot than burning your concentrate- but these low temperatures actually produce some very good vapor. The quad coil, however, might be a little too hot for use with some concentrates- since there was a slight lack of flavor. This lack of flavor can be remedied a little by switching out the metal tube with the glass cap. 

Bottomline

The Yocan Torch and Yocan Torch XL are devices that allow you to really be the driver of your experience. The several possible ways you can mix and match the components add an element of fun to the session. Its downside, however, is that it’s not exactly portable. You’ll need a glass rig and water at every use. So if you’re looking for an eNail that you can also use when you’re out- we’d recommend the KandyPens Session, or the Linx Apollo if you prefer water filtration.

Consistent vapor quality, a unique design, and several features- these two devices do their jobs well. When choosing between the two – it’s probably best to decide how complex or how straightforward you want your session to be. 

An eNail is leagues better than a blowtorch. I’d recommend the Torch 2022 as a great first eNail. It’s definitely the most reasonably priced one on the market.
