Review Summary

4.7/5

The Utillian 722 offers excellent value with a high performance to price ratio. It uses convection heating to efficiently heat your herb and an isolated airpath to achieve pure and flavorful vapor. Simple and straightforward, the device has a one-button interface that is used to toggle between its 4 well-calibrated preset temperature settings. The 722 is recommended for beginners looking for a value-driven vape that does not compromise vapor quality.

Background

Utillian is a popular Canadian manufacturer that makes vapes in the mid-price-range, which typically perform well and provide excellent value to the price. This new Utillian 722 is their flagship portable dry herb vape, and it has a few upgrades over the prev gen 721, such as better airflow and a higher max temp.

The U722 is a simple-use Convection vaporizer with four preset temperature levels (+Boost mode). It is also compatible with Wax & Extracts using the included oven insert. It retails for $149 from Vape-Smart, and coupon code TVG10 will save you 10%.

Design

The Utillian 722 uses a familiar design inspired by the Crafty+ (Review). It is a square design, where the bottom of the vape is the battery & airpath, and the oven sits on top, covered by the mouthpiece (magnetic in this case.)

The exterior shell is made from anodized aluminum with a rubber coating, which I assume helps isolate and contain the heat. It also has a nice to touch non-slip feel to it. At the bottom, there is the Micro USB charging port and the air-intake hole.

Magnetic Mouthpiece

The mouthpiece sits on top of the device, and unlike the Crafty+, which uses a twist-open design, the U722 uses magnets to firmly hold it in place. It opens easily to expose the Stainless steel chamber. The mouthpiece part has a “straw” like an extension that can be folded away when not in use. Once again, this design has proven to work well with the previous generation (Utillian 721), as well as many other vapes (such as the XVape Starry. It cools down the vapor as it travels inside the mouthpiece.

Stainless Steel Chamber

The Chamber is made from stainless steel and has a capacity of around 0.3gr. The vape uses Convection heating, which has been improved from the prev version (721.) With convection heating, the heat is generated outside the oven (underneath in this case) and is then pulled into the oven with each draw. This heating method usually preserves the natural flavors of the herb and produce high-quality vapor.

The Utillians airpath is isolated from the battery and electronic components, once again as an attempt to keep the flavor as pure as possible.

How to use

The Utillian 722 has a one-button interface which is simple and straight forward. While it lacks precise temperature controls, it has 4 well-calibrated temp settings of (356°F, 374°F, 392°F, 410°F).

To use the Utillian 722:

  • Load with dry herb or wax (using the included insert). Keep the herb fluffy and do not pack too tight. Make sure that air can travel through the crushed buds.
  • Tap the button 5 times to turn on and the vape will start heating up. The LED will start blinking.
  • 2 Taps on the button will toggle temps
  • Once the LED is solid, the vape is ready to use. Inhale slowly through the mouthpiece.

Boost mode: Holding the power button for more than a couple of seconds will heat up the oven to its max temp of 437°F. This is a good way to finish off sessions or use with extracts.

Tip: while the 722 is compatible with both herb and wax, I recommend not using wax with your main dry herb vape. Wax tends to get things dirty and stick, which will increase maintenance and reduce longevity. I recommend buying a separate vape pen and for dabs and using this vape exclusively with dry herbs.

Heat-up time was around 40-60 seconds, depending on the temp settings.

Similarities: design, size, oven capacity.

Differences: design, price, heating method, temp levels, No haptic feedback.

Performance & Vapor Quality

When it comes to vapor quality, the Utillian shines bright. The vapor is pure and flavorful, especially compared to similar vapes in the price range. Convection vaporizers are typically a lot more expensive (Example- Firefly 2 is almost double the price), and the U722 gives it a fair fight when it comes to vapor quality.

The 722 produced thick, easily visible vapor, especially on the high settings. The second and third settings of around 390F were the sweet spot between flavor and vapor production, and that's where I spent most of my time.

In terms of efficiency, the Utillian 722 did a great job of fully extracting the herb. After each session, the herb was brown and crunchy, which is exactly what we want to see. I often used “boost mode” to finish off my sessions and extract every last bit of active ingredients from my herb.

Battery: 2300mAh, around 60 min usage.

Bottom Line

The Utillian 722 is very successful in what it is trying to achieve- a simple use vape with great vapor quality and a very fair price tag. It may not have all the bells and whistles, such as a smartphone app or precise temperature controls, but it does have the most crucial element, which is the vapor quality.

It surely seems that Utillian has steeped up their manufacturing quality, as we saw with the recent release of the Utillian 620 (Review) and this current 722. Utillian are known to provide great value with their vapes, and the 722 is no different.
